ORIGINS
The early 90s was the dawning of the age of computers - email was already in use, albeit internally and mostly proprietary via local area networks. The Internet wasn’t the behemoth it is today, although it had definitely started gaining traction. In the Philippines, people were already using pagers and mobile phones (of the huge clunky variety), and some of the larger organizations had already started working with computers - although it was in 1994 when computers really took off in the country.
At the time, Nexus founders Juan Chua, Alfonso Olondriz, and Mario Arroyo had been working at another tech firm, although the gears were already turning in Juan Chua’s mind to build a computer company that set itself apart from the rest.
After bringing up the idea, Chua left his previous company and took a month-long break in the US. Even during his break he had Nexus in mind, taking it to himself to visit the now defunct computer trade show COMDEX to see what the future of computer technology had in store.
“It was Adolfo Suzara, a shareholder and former director who came up with the name ‘Nexus’. We liked the name because it gave a physical form to what we are: different companies coming together to do something new.”
Juan Chua | President
Nexus was formally incorporated on December 20, 1994, a mere days after acquiring their first office space on the 13th floor of the Strata 100 building in Ortigas Center. A Hong Kong-based company had decided to pull out from the 250 square meter space and left everything in the office. Nexus acquired everything--from the office equipment, to the furniture--even down to the coffee maker. The founders personally oversaw the cleaning of the space, and even spent the days between Christmas and New Year’s Day making sure that the space would be ready for them to move into sooner than later.
GROWTH
Once Chua and his team had formally set up shop, the clients came pouring in. Even larger corporations such as JAKA Investments and Jollibee—who normally chose their partners through an extensive vetting process and usually only work with companies that had already built up their reputation through years of service—came to Nexus to work with them.
Six months in and the first office space had already become too small for Nexus and they had to move to a bigger office in the same building due to their growth. Nexus, along with the other items they acquired upon moving into the first office, kept the coffee maker.
With a steady influx of clients, Nexus established mutually successful partnerships with Unix, Microsoft Windows NT, and then emerging Hewlett-Packard - to name a few. The deal with HP was one of the most fortuitous partnerships that they had gone into, especially as Nexus bagged the deal just as HP was about to make it big as one of the leading computer brands — a title they hold to this day.
“One of the key points of Nexus history was when we became a reseller of Hewlett-Packard for their PC and PC server business. At that point in time HP was not really a player, and we were very lucky to become their reseller just when they were ready to take off.”
Alfonso Olondriz | Vice President for Sales
It was this further growth which prompted Nexus to move into their present offices at the Don Pablo building in Legazpi Village in Makati in 1996. With HP and Microsoft hitting the mainstream, business was booming for Nexus. At one point, Nexus accounted for some 70 percent of HP’s local business.
Three years in, Nexus was dubbed “the fastest-growing computer company in the Philippines” by PC World. The rate at which Nexus grew was the fastest that they had ever seen.
Soon after, Nexus also bought into Jupiter Systems, a tech firm with a focus on software development. Jupiter Systems had recently celebrated its 30th year in the business, and is a proud software provider for car dealerships in the country, as well as the entire Hong Kong airport.
Nexus continued to expand with the foundation of Edupro, a computer training center that served as a countermeasure to tackle their need to educate customers with the new technologies that Nexus continued to market. Nexus saw the need as they often found their engineers training their customers on how to properly deploy and make use of the technologies they push out, especially with Nexus’s reputation of backing promising new platforms, such as when their customers started using Microsoft Windows NT.
Add to that the need for upgrades brought on by the “millennium bug” and you could really say that Nexus had an eventful life as an emerging local computer company.
In 2017, Nexus also started building its 10-storey corporate headquarters along Metropolitan Avenue in Makati.
In 2018, Nexus established a new subsidiary, bneXt, a solutions and services provider specializing in enterprise digital transformation.
NEXUS NOW
“Twenty-four years on, I’m very proud to say we’re still relevant. We’re at the forefront of analytics, big data, security, and managed services. Nexus evolved together with IT. Whatever area IT evolves into, we will be there.”
Juan Chua | President (a quote from Nexus eBook 2018)
Today Nexus remains one of the leading corporate IT resellers and systems integrator in the country. Nexus serves as the vanguard for its competitors in the local industry and effectively introduces the most relevant modern technologies in the local tech scene while continuously venturing into IT companies with different core businesses to further boost its value as a company to its partner-clients, principals, and stakeholders.
Nexus approaches the future with fresh energy and a resolve to continue its original vision for the company. Nexus will continue to build up its infrastructure and business processes to ensure the most rewarding experience for its clients and its people.
